Global Carnatic Music Association launched events – Chennai Online, 28 November, 2007

Several leading Carnatic musicians have got together to form the Global Carnatic Music Association (GCMA), with headquarters in Chennai, to promote and celebrate Indian music and culture worldwide.

This will be a professionally-run organization to provide a forum for advocacy of Carnatic music, said its founder and chairperson Sudha Ragunathan in Chennai on November 27, 2007.

It will also provide a common platform for musicians and artistes to share their experiences discuss common issues and sharpen their skills, she added. The trustee of GCMA, K N Sashikiran, said membership will be open to all artistes in the field of Carnatic music. Age would be no bar.

Sashikiran said it had already received good response from over 100 artistes in the southern states, and also from musicians abroad.

Veteran violinist T N Krishnan stressed the importance of having such a forum.

Leading vocalist Aruna Sairam said the organization would conduct a free health check-up campaign at Hotel Residency Towers on November 29 and 30, 2007, exclusively for musicians.

Vocalist P Unnikrishnan stressed the need for globalization of Carnatic music.

The Hindu
“While in the lower octaves or in the top register, her raga sancharas are dazzling, and the delineation has an intellectual touch.” “Sudha Ragunathan’s recitals are an integration of talent, virtuosity and an excellent interpretation of music… thriving on a fascile and melodious voice. Her effortless hooking of distant notes is a notable feature in her creative raga singing.” “Sudha Ragunathan is a facile vocal range peppered with an instinctive feel for words. The full and neatly focussed tonality and the smooth flowing movements in all the octaves make her an outstanding singer with individuality.”

“How well she blends voice with vidwat! Her concert is a class of its own. She can glimpse in an intellectual way, the core of Apurva ragas and endow them with new life.” ‘Sudha Ragunathan’s voice is easier felt than described. It comes straight from the heart, flows gently like a stream, leaving no aspects untouched and missing no beauty along its way in all three octaves.”
